GRAFTON, Mass. – Where in Grafton was Smiley?
On his latest outing, Smiley visited the statue of Jerome Wheelock, which stands at Grafton Common at the entrance of South Street. Many Grafton residents likely wil pass by Wheelock this Wednesday, since South Street is widely thought of as the place to visit on Halloween night.
Wheelock was a Grafton-born inventor best known for the Wheelock steam cylinder packing, an improvement on the steam engine. His will left the town of Grafton money to build the Grafton Public Library and the statue stands within sight of that original building.
Smiley lives in editor Jennifer Lord Paluzzi's camera bag, so you never know where he'll turn up in Grafton. Email suggestions to jpaluzzi@dailyvoice.com.
