GRAFTON, Mass. - Andrew A. Hoekstra, 80, of North Grafton, died September 23, 2012.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Lola M. ( DeStefanis ); two sons, Donald A. of Worcester, Thomas A. of San Diego CA; one daughter, Lisa M. Hoekstra-Swartz and her husband Willem F. of Henderson NV; two brothers, Louis Jr. of FL, Rev. Dr. Charles E. and his wife Judi of IL; one sister, Deborah M. Baker and her husband James R. of Sutton; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was born in Northbridge July 1, 1932 and raised there the son of the late Louis Hoekstra Sr. and Muriel M. (Thomas). He was also predeceased by a brother, Howard
John Hoekstra and a sister-in-law, Alice A. Hoekstra.
Andy was a graduate of Northbridge High School and The Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Bourne studying Marine Engineering. Mr. Hoekstra was a Korean Veteran serving in The US Navy as a LTJG. He was commissioned in 1954 and continued to serve in The US Naval Reserve retiring in 1992 at the rank of Commander. Andy was a Marine Engineer at The Electric Boat Co. involved in the construction of the atomic
submarines USS Nautilus and Sea Wolf. He also worked in engineering and purchasing at Wyman Gordon Co., Norton Co., General Electric Co., AEM, Applied Dynamics and Bigelow Electric.
Andy lived many years in North Grafton where he was an active parishioner of St. Mary’s
Church serving as a lector, Parish Council member and a former Bishop’s Fund chairman. He was also a liaison for Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston City Hospital and Tufts Medical Center.
All are welcome to attend the celebration of a funeral Mass for Andy Wednesday, September 26 at 11 a.m. in his Parish Church of St. Mary, 17 Waterville St., North Grafton MA 01536. He will then be laid to rest with Military Honors in Pine Grove Cemetery North Grafton. There are no calling hours.
The family asks that you remember and honor him with memorial donations to Veterans Inc., Mass Veterans Shelter, 69 Grove St. Worcester MA 01605 in lieu of flowers.
