Robert J. Smith Jr.

LYNN, Mass. - Robert J. Smith Sr., 81, of Peabody, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. He was the husband of Anne H. (Porter) Smith, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage and the son of the late Ambrose and Florence
(Lannaville) Smith.

Bob is also survived by his daughter Catherine A. Carmody and her husband Dennis of Lynn, his two sons, Robert J. Smith Jr. and his wife Gail of Lynn, and Paul E. Smith and his wife Barbara of Grafton. He also leaves his six grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Molly, and Jake Carmody, and Alexander and Erika Smith, as well as
several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Kenneth M. Smith and the brother of the late Shirley McCarthy and Patricia Southwick. Bob will be sadly missed by his loving family and many special friends.

Born and raised in Lynn, he was a graduate of Lynn Vocational High School, class of 1949. He was United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served on the Mediterranean Sea. Bob was the president and founder of Unique Carbide Products Inc. in Lynn. An active member of the Lynn Lions Club, he served as president of the Lynn Lions Club, president of Camp Lion and deputy district governor of the Massachusetts Lions. Bob was an active member of the Franco American War Veterans, Post #161, Lynn, American Legion Post #57, Swampscott, the VFW Post #1240, Swampscott, and the Lynn and Peabody Elks. He was also a past president of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was inducted into the Lynn Vocational Technical School Hall of Fame and was a member of the LVTI
Alumnae Association. Bob enjoyed spending his summers at Lake Winnipesaukee in Moultonborough, NH with his family and friends.

Bob’s funeral will be held from the Solimine Landergan & Richardson Funeral Home,  67 Ocean St. (Rt1A) Lynn on Monday, October 29, 2012 at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. funeral mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church,
Lynnfield. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012.
