GRAFTON, Mass. – Sanderson "Sandy" Smith of Grafton and Jensen Beach, Fla., died Dec. 30 in Florida. He was 87.
He was born May 20, 1925, in Holyoke, Mass., to Claude H. and Alice Sanderson Smith. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1942 and served in the Army during World War II as a corporal in the European Theater.
He received a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1949 and a master's degree in bacteriology from Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies in Ann Arbor in 1950. He worked at Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals, which later became Novartis, for 26 years before retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Congregational Church of Grafton and First Congregational Church in Lake Worth, Fla. Smith was also a member of the American Bacteriological Society, Franklin Masonic Lodge in Grafton and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Smith was predeceased by his first wife, Jane E. McIntosh Smith, in 1991; and his second wife, Marion Booth Rossiter Smith, in 2011. He is survived by a daughter, Candace Covello, of Jensen Beach; two sons, Douglas, of Plano, Tex., and Mark, of North Grafton; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Congregational Church of Grafton. There are no calling hours. Roney Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
