To the editor:
Every year the Grafton Lions Club holds a dinner, to recognize a humanitarian, and an auction to raise money for the Lions Clubs International Foundation. LCIF is a charitable foundation that has funded many projects around the world. It has aided in disaster relief world wide and funded hospitals to help prevent blindness around the world.
This year LCIF has already awarded a $100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant with money from the disaster relief fund, allowing Lions in the areas affected by Superstorm Sandy to immediately begin providing assistance. Many Lions are already working with local food banks, police and fire departments and other local organizations.
In addition to the Major Grant, LCIF has awarded $100,000 emergency grants to Lions in each of these states: North Carolina, Maryland , New Jersey, Connecticut, New York and West Virginia. This fast response to our recent disaster is an example of how the monies raised for LCIF will be used in humanitarian projects around the world.
The Lions believe that "In a World Of Service " one person can and does make a difference, but together we can make an even greater impact. Following this belief each year we recognize a humanitarian from Grafton that we feel impacts the lives of many for the better. Our Humanitarian for the year 2012 is Philip L. Gauthier. We hope that you will join us for the evening in honoring him.
There will be an auction later to help fund our contributions to LCIF and our Lions charitable activities in Grafton. Wonderful donations of Christmas decorations, handwork, possible presents, food and libations, gift certificates, impractical and practical objects all will be going, going, gone. Please join with the Lions for a wonderful evening, Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Polish National Home in South Grafton. Cocktails are at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., $25 per person, RSVP by Nov. 22 to Lion Sue Robbins 508-839-6862 or Lion Noelle Dowd 508-839-3618.
