To the editor:
At the start of this school year, the North Grafton Elementary Schools will hold a fun and educational event called Education for Fitness Walk-A-Thon.” The event will be held Sept. 11-13 and run by the PTG of the North Grafton Elementary School and North Street Elementary School.
We are a 501c3 non-profit that raises funds for educational and enrichment programs including the purchase of sports equipment used as part of the physical education curriculum at our schools. The combined student population of both schools from Pre-K to 6th grade is 800 students. With faculty, staff, and parent volunteers, it is estimated that there will be nearly 1,000 participants for this year’s event. We are planning a very lively and fun event for all involved while promoting the importance of physical activity for better health.
As you know, childhood obesity has increased in the past 30 years. Children who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese. Schools play a critical role by establishing a supportive environment that fosters the promotion of healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity.
We are reaching out to community businesses or individuals to sponsor our Walk- A -Thon. We have several levels of sponsorship including a Presenting Sponsor whose name will appear on all of the t-shirts worn that day. We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will join us in educating our community and supporting our 2012 event.
Thank you for your kind consideration,
North Grafton Elementary School Parent Teacher Group
