GRAFTON, Mass. — A Blanchard Road family escaped from their home Monday night when a two-alarm fire that started in the garage quickly spread to the attic.
Bharat and Varsha Desai, of 48 Blanchard Road, were in their four-bedroom home when the fire broke out. The family escaped before firefighters arrived, according to Fire Chief Michael "Mickey" Gauthier. No injuries were reported.
The blaze started just after 10 p.m. When the fire department arrived, the garage was fully engulfed and had spread to the attic above the second floor. Two cars in the garage were destroyed.
An Alana Drive neighbor heard an explosion and ran out to help. "Myself and another gentleman saw there were no lights on in the house," he said. "We pushed the front door open, but all the smoke came billowing out — and the heat."
Another neighbor said they heard banging. When he and his son went outside, the flames in the garage were as high as the tree next to it.
Gauthier said the cause of the fire was undetermined, and the fire marshal was investigating.
The Sutton Fire Department was called in to assist.
The family had lived in the 2,500-square-foot house since 1994, according to Grafton property records.
