GRAFTON, Mass. - Grafton students scored well above their state counterparts during the spring MCAS tests, a report released by the Department of Education Wednesday said.

Grafton students scored strongly in science and technology/engineering. Students also had high showings in math, with Grafton students marked as "advanced" at a level exceeding the state average.

The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is designed to meet the requirements of the Education Reform Law of 1993. Students are tested annually and must pass the Grade 10 tests in English Language Arts, math and one of the four high school science and engineering/technology tests to receive their diploma.

On the Grade 10 MCAS:

  • English/Language Arts: 94 percent of Grafton students scored proficient or higher, compared to 88 percent in the state. While 9 percent of state students showed the need for improvement, only 4 percent of Grafton students scored in that category; 2 percent of Grafton students failed;
  • Math: 87 percent of Grafton students scored proficient or higher, compared to 78 percent in the state. While 15 percent of state students showed the need for improvement, only 8 percent of Grafton students scored in that category; 4 percent of Grafton students failed;
  • Science and technology/engineering: 86 percent of Grafton students scored proficient or higher, compared to 69 percent in the state. While 25 percent of state students showed the need for improvement, only 12 percent of Grafton students scored in that category; 2 percent of Grafton students failed.

John Dowling:

Fantastic results! The three examples of how well the 10th grade did are wonderful but a quick review of the entire scorecard for grades 3-8, and 10 are even better and demonstrate across the board overachievements. Hearty Congrats to all Grafton schools, teachers, Principals and Administrators and to our Superintendent Jay Cummings for putting Grafton in a great position regarding MCAS and no doubt on a trend for even better results going forward. But more importantly, congrats to the students who worked so hard to get these results. Einstein once said "Education is not received. It is achieved." Great achievement Grafton!
