NORTHBRIDGE, Mass. – Brian Mahoney and Stephanie Neely were rewarded $500 Saturday for their first place finish in the men and women divisions of the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation’s 1st annual 5K and 10K.
About 90 athletes participated in the event that started and ended at Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center on Beaumont Drive.
Under the direction of Andrew Salmon, executive director of Beaumont, the race was sponsored by UniBank, Salmon Health and Retirement, AllCare Medical Supplies, Sunshine Sign, Koopman Lumber & Hardware, Vital Emergency Medical Services, Gaudette Insurance, Millbury Savings Bank and Rep. George Peterson.
The foundation teamed up with the 15-40 Connection, which is a cancer awareness charity, Salmon said. The age group of 15 to 40 is the only age group that sees an increase in the number of cancer deaths, he said.
All the money raised this year goes to the foundation, said Julie Salmon, one of the race organizers.
She estimated they raised about $10,000, much of that coming from sponsors and for which the foundation is grateful.
In addition to Mahoney, who had a time of 32.59, second and third place overall winners were Peter Gleason, 34:29, and Russell Trottier, 37:22.
Salmon said a list of runners and times will be posted on the Education Foundation website.
An arm of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, the foundation nurtures alliances between business and education in out-of-school and in-school settings, such as Humanities Scholars, Youth Leadership Academy, STEMkids Conference, Manufacturing Academy and Art in the Valley.
This year’s STEMkids Conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tufts-Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton.
